Event FAQ
Concert Etiquette to Keep in Mind
In order to heighten the experience for you as a listener and for the students as performers, we’d like to remind you of the following points of concert etiquette:
- Plan to arrive on time. It is important that everyone is in his or her seat before the downbeat of the first selection. If you do happen to run a little late, please wait and enter the concert area between musical selections.
- Listen to the music. While the students are performing, we ask that you give them your undivided attention. Try not to talk while the music is playing.
- Remain seated. If you find you must leave the concert area for some reason, please wait and do so only between selections.
- If bringing small children, sit near an exit. Small children often become restless during the course of the concert. By sitting near an exit you can minimize the distraction by slipping out as quietly as possible.
- Avoid extraneous noise. If your cell phone or watch has an electronic alert, please be sure it is turned off during the concert.
- Be courteous while taking pictures. Flash photography is discouraged while the students are performing. If you plan to video the concert, do so from the back of the auditorium as to not cause a distraction for others.
Marching Band Competitions FAQs
Q: Where do I start?
A: Page 17 of the Band Handbook has some great information!
Q: When/Where do I drop off my student on the day of the contest?
A: Students will meet in the band hall at Timberview High School before each event. They will practice and eat at the school, and then from THS they will ride a bus to the event. An emailed letter from the director sent a few days before the event will let you know the full itinerary for the day, including what time students should arrive at THS.
Q: What does my student need to bring with him or her for the event?
A: Band students will be told what to wear in the same communication from directors that provides the itinerary; usually they need to wear a show shirt, uniform shorts, black over-the-calf socks, and marching shoes. They will also need to bring their water bottle and money for concessions or souvenirs (some venues take cash, some don’t). Students, as performers, do not need tickets for themselves.
Q: What time does it start? What time does it end?
A: Several days before the event, the directors will provide an itinerary for the day. It will include the time that students need to be at the Timberview High School band hall, when they will board the bus to ride to the event, what time they are expected to perform, and other details. If you want to see the band perform (and of course you do!), plan on arriving at the event venue about 30 minutes before the scheduled performance time. These schedules are loose and may change quickly! If the band makes it to finals (and of course we hope they do!), they will perform for a second time. Plan for competitions to be all-day events.
Q: Should I go?
A: If you can, please come and support the band by cheering them on! Both the students and other band parents would love to see you there!
Q: Should I volunteer?
A: We hope you will! Family involvement, no matter how much, is essential to the success of the Timberview Marching Band, providing much-needed assistance and support to ensure that students are free focus on their performances and do their best! Volunteer opportunities are listed in CutTime.
Q: How do I buy tickets? How much are they?
A: Each venue has its own pricing and method of selling tickets. They are sometimes available online ONLY, with tickets emailed to you with a code to be shown on a smartphone for entry. This page has links tor all the contest web pages we have so far. Of course, certain volunteers will gain access to the stadium for free, with the band.
Q: What should I have with me at the event?
A: Bring a way to stay cool and hydrated—the stands get hot. Consider a hat, umbrella, and/or sunblock. Bring money for concessions, or a way to pay at locations that don’t take cash and don’t allow outside food. Bring your patience—sometimes things get off schedule and run late. Check to see if the event or venue has a clear bag policy or similar restrictions. And don’t forget to bring your enthusiasm for our students! They love having an appreciative audience.
