What it is:
Beginning each fall, high school students across Texas audition in their TMEA Region by performing selected music for a panel of judges. The top musicians from each Region then advance to compete against musicians from other Regions in their TMEA Area. The highest-ranking musicians judged at those TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in one of 18 Texas All-State.
Auditioning to be All-State musician in Texas is a transformative experience that goes beyond just musical achievement, offering a pathway to personal and professional growth.
This year’s selected music:
All-State Band Audition Etudes
Need the music? The Directors plan to have it ready for you by the first day of band camp! Just ask!
Why It’s Important
Unique Opportunities: All-State student musicians participate in three days of rehearsals with their respective All-State ensemble during the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention, pushing their musical skills and understanding and exposing them to renowned conductors who offer valuable learning experiences and expand students’ musical perspectives.
Personal and Musical Growth: The audition process instills discipline, perseverance, and a strong work ethic. In fact, the audition process contributes to significant musical growth, regardless of whether a student makes it to the final ensemble.
Future Benefits: The experience of working towards a goal and performing under pressure prepares students for future challenges. Overcoming the challenges of the audition process and performing at a high level builds confidence and self-esteem. In addition, earning a spot in the All-Region or All-State Band can be a significant boost to a student’s college application, especially for music programs. Colleges and universities often recruit All-State musicians for their music programs and may offer scholarships for both music and non-music majors.
